Psalm 12 Pure Promises

Psalm 12:6 The words of the Lord are pure words; As silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times.

If you read through Psalm 12, you will find that King David is pouring his heart out to God because of the trouble he is facing. We learn that God will allow his people to overcome vs. 5b.

  • Ps. 12:5b Now I will arise,” says the Lord; “I will set him in the safety for which he longs.”

How do we know God’s people will overcome? Verse 6 tells us. Psalm 12:6 Is straight forward verse about the importance of clinging to God’s Promises in the midst of opposition.

  • Ps. 12:6 The words of the Lord are pure words; As silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times.

God’s response in verse 5-b6 assures of a few thing and makes 1 important point.

o   Assurance #1 God sees you and knows you need

o   Assurance #2 God cares about you because he has made promises to provide.

o   Assurance #3 God’s promises are refined perfectly and as pure as precious metal.

Life is full of sin and broken promises. The world’s promises are not pure promises. They are tainted with fallen man. Everyone’s promises seem to have an agenda for personal benefit. However, God desires to bring you the goodness and purity of who he is and you are the beneficiary of his promises because of his sacrificial love. The fact the Bible says, God’s promises are Refined 7 times is important. Seven is the number of perfection. God’s promises are perfect. You will not be left wanting.

Therefore, from this verse we should draw one powerful conclusion. WE should be encouraged to learn God’s promises and cling to them. This makes his promises the pillar to overcoming adversity. God is a God of Hope. God is a God of certainty. These promises are wrapped in his nature and his nature is holy, good and sovereign. His promises are found in His Word.

The alternative to verse 6, is living the life of verse 8.

  • Ps. 12:8 the wicked strut about, and evil is praised throughout the land.

The alternative to living for God is seen in People determined to live like they are god. In elevating their self above God, they seek to live life for their own pleasures. People look for temporary gratification of their fleshly urges. However, Fleshly indulgence does not satisfy the soul and therefore does not possess the promises we need.  We should long for a foundation that is good, solid trustworthy and able to supply for us beyond the Temporary. Human nature has always been quick to wonder from the goodness of God. His Promises remind us of His authority, our need, and his loving goodness toward us.  None of us are free from the temptation of sin. The Grace of God is what we need. God thank you for the purity of your promises in the midst of our fallen world. We need you.
